Solar Air Conditioner
Proof of Concept

Ever since Lennox came out with their solar air conditioner “system”, a lot of interest in Solar Air has been directed toward this new area of HVAC.

The following video is a demonstration of an air conditioner being run totally by solar panels. It shows this new “solar air conditioner” technology in its very basic state. This is NOT a Lennox demo! It is a third party proof of concept. The reality is that Solar AC is not only feasible but is here NOW! …more about that later.

A Solar Air Conditioner in Action

Description of the Solar Air Conditioner Demo

What you are looking at is a 13,500 BTU air conditioner being run exclusively off 24 volts DC directly from a six panel 1080 watt solar array (180 watts per panel). Of course, in a home environment you would have backup batteries that would be charged from the array and also the power grid when it is overcast outside. The capacitance of the batteries also acts as a voltage regulator, thereby keeping the source voltage at a constant 24 volts DC (no power fluctuations) which is important to the long life of the air conditioner unit.

At one point in the video a technician walks in front of the solar array and you can hear the noise of the air conditioning unit change, which indicates that it was not getting enough electrical power. This type of fluctuation is what the batteries would prevent.

As I said earlier, this is a demo or proof of concept. The A/C in this demo is small (13,500 BTUs) – which is basically a window air conditioner. But, a full central air conditioning system is now available through Lennox. This demo is not connected to Lennox but gives you an idea of what can be done on a larger scale – like Lennox does.

Learn About the Central Air Conditioner

Central Air Conditioner Unit - HVAC Terms

The central air conditioner is a modern miracle of technology. Most people take it for granted. Many people think of it as that box with a fan out in the yard. But, there is so much more “going on” in the “system” than meets the eye and like most mechanical things it requires care, and regular maintenance. When your air conditioning system starts to go bad, it’s not as easy to detect as, say, bald tires on your car.

Central air conditioners are not just a single unit. It consists of several components distributed inside and outside your home or business.  These components include an evaporator (or cooling coil(s)), compressor(s), condenser(s) and associated support hardware (such as thermostats, etc.).

And don’t forget the ductwork that connects it all together. To maintain proper air circulation and ventilation, a good quality duct is a very necessary component of the complete system. Inadequate ductwork can cause the leaking of cool air into spaces of your home or business that you don’t want cooled. This will cause your energy bill to be too high. It’s like your momma used to say; “We don’t want to cool the whole neighborhood.” In this case, however, the neighborhood is your attic or crawl spaces.

Central Air Conditioner Supply Ducts

One of the main support components of the central air conditioner system is the blower motor, which blows the cool air through the duct system. This component is usually part of the furnace. If your furnace is older than 15 years, the blower motor may not be able to perform efficiently enough for you to get full benefit from your new central air system.  In that case, you may want to replace the furnace at the same time as you replace the air conditioning unit so that your A/C will perform to its rated efficiency.

Another, less glamorous, but very necessary, support component is the air filter. You might be surprised at how well your air conditioning unit will run, and how long it will last if you just change out the air filter every month with a clean high quality filter. And, by the way, the cheaper filters may be less expensive but they do not perform as well and can cost you more in maintenance in the long run. Pleated air filters offer more surface space to capture contaminants and pollutants and therefore are recommended above the cheap fiberglass ones.

Central Air Conditioner vs Window Units

Using individual room air conditioners is not a very energy-efficient choice for cooling a home or business. Their use is not just hard on your energy bill, but the temperature is seldom consistent from room to room, which negatively affects you comfort level.

The central air conditioner not only provides the function of cooling the indoor air, but also circulates, cleans, dehumidifies or, in some cases, humidifies the air too.

The central air conditioner can help control the pollen and other pollutants in your home more easily than window units. This is because there is but one air intake point, and that makes filtering much easier. My wife has allergies so we use special filters that are approved by the American Lung Association. If you have allergies (or anyone in your family does) I recommend this type of filter. They really make a difference. If cost is a factor, you can find cheaper prices by shopping for them in discount stores or even on the Internet.

Protect Your Central Air Conditioner

A springtime check-up of your air conditioning system could cut an air conditioner’s operating cost by as much as 10 percent and provide more cooling capacity as well. Also, an annual checkup can catch and fix problems early that could cause you and your family a lot of grief during the inevitable busy summer “heat wave”. Have you ever had to wait two to three days for a trusted A/C repair man during the busy season? Plan ahead. Change your filter regularly. Get an annual checkup for your system. Keep your central air conditioner system well maintained, and be “COOL” for a long time.

Air Conditioning Systems

Air conditioning Arlington Tx brings you this guest article by Mr. Varalakshmi. It gives a brief explanation of the various types of air conditioning systems such as evaporative coolers, window units, and central air conditioners. Types and Functions of Modern Air Conditioning Systems

By Varalakshmi

An Air Conditioner (often referred to as AC) is a system designed to dehumidify and extract heat from an area. The cooling is done using a simple refrigeration cycle. The definition of cold is the absence of heat and all air conditioning systems work on this basic principle. Heat can be removed through the process of radiation, convection, and heat cooling through a process called the refrigeration cycle.

Refrigeration air conditioning equipment usually reduces the humidity of the air processed by the system. The relatively cold (below the dew point) evaporator coil condenses water vapor from the processed air, sending the water to a drain and removing water vapor from the cooled space and lowering the relative humidity.

An evaporative cooler is a device that draws outside air through a wet pad, such as a large sponge soaked with water. The sensible heat of the incoming air, as measured by a dry bulb thermometer, is reduced. The total heat (sensible heat plus latent heat) of the entering air is unchanged.

HVAC is an acronym that stands for the closely related functions of “Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning the technology of indoor or automotive environmental comfort. HVAC system design is a major sub discipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.

Portable refrigeration air conditioners come in two forms, split and hose. These compressor-based refrigerant systems are air-cooled, meaning they use air to exchange heat, in the same way as a car or typical household air conditioner.

Split air conditioners have a split design with an external or out door unit that houses the compressor and one or more internal units that are served by the compressor and house the air handlers. This design makes them similar to central air conditioning units however the fact that they use smaller air ducts makes them less expensive and easier to install.

Central air conditioning systems are often installed in modern residences, offices, and public buildings, but are difficult to retrofit (install in a building that was not designed to receive it) because of the bulky air ducts required. A duct system must be carefully maintained to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the ducts.

The best way of stopping air leaks in your house is to have an energy audit done by a professional. You need a highly trained nationally recognized thermographer. We can help you!

This is really a “no brainer”. You will easily recoup the cost of the audit and the savings just keep on going. Most of the remedies are simple and inexpensive – weather stripping, caulk, etc.

The procedure is interesting to watch, and the results can really affect your monthly heating and cooling bills, in a big way!

Here is a really great video about how Energy Audits can help you in stopping air leaks in your home while saving you money each and every month!

The simple fact is that if you don’t stop air leaks in you home, your central air conditioner has to work overtime. This reduces the lifespan of your unit and also makes your heating and cooling bills higher than a kite! So if you want to REALLY lower those cooling bills, plug the leaks, have plenty of insulation, and you might even consider a solar powered air conditioner!

Air Conditioning Arlington Tx

Air Conditioning Arlington Tx is a Sister Site of TNS Mechanical, LLC.

ACMan Air Conditioning Arlington Tx

We chose the name of this website so that  someone searching the Internet for a new Air Conditioner installation, AC service, or AC repair, either residential or commercial would be able to find us. If you are here, it must have worked. Welcome!

The average homeowner or business owner knows little about air conditioning systems and feel vulnerable when it breaks down. Everyone wants to be treated fairly.

Most people in need of air conditioning service, air conditioning repair, or a new air conditioner installation want to know 3 things right up front:

  • How much will it cost me? (AC repair, AC service, or a new air conditioning system)

  • Do you service or install my favorite “trusted” air conditioner brand?

  • Are you a reputable AC Contractor?

This article tells you a little about TNS Mechanical Services as an air conditioning contractor and hopefully answers those three burning (pun intended!) questions.

We want to help you get the best value for your heating and air conditioning “buck” for both immediate savings and long term savings through reduced energy requirements.

How much will it cost me to get my A/C fixed or replaced with a new air conditioning system?

We have no hidden charges. You pay just the labor and parts.

Many of our competitors, in the HVAC business, boast about a low ac service inspection charge.

You must ask yourself: “How can they do that?”

If we think it through for a moment we can understand that things just don’t add up.

The cost of overhead (technicians wages, gasoline, office space, storage rental space for inventory, A/C repair truck maintenance, etc.) to “put a truck on the road” to your home is more than that low heating and air conditioning service fee you are being charged.

Are these other heating and air conditioning companies just very generous, unselfish, charitable? How can these guys stay in HVAC business?

It should be obvious that they have to make that money back somewhere.

TNS Mechanical does not play those games.

As Flip Wilson used to say, “What you see is what you get.” We are open about what we charge, from the very start. We charge $69 for the ac service inspection fee and that includes the first hour of labor if needed.

Therefore, our technicians don’t feel pressured to “find” something wrong to make back the “lost” revenue from a “low ball” inspection fee. You won’t hear “bad compressor” or “bad coil” from us, unless it really is bad.

We feel this is the best and most honest way to do business. I’m sure we lose some sales, but we refuse to use questionable sales tactics.

Some companies make a big deal about Tax Credits on their websites – even during times when these tax credits are not even in effect! That’s just wrong!

You can call us at any time to see what – if any – tax credits are being offered. We’ll get you the most product for the best price, including tax credits, if available.

If you are interested in a new AC or heating system we can’t quote you a price without looking at your home.

The cost will depend on many factors – the manufacturer and the model of the unit you choose, the number of square feet to be cooled, the present condition of your heating and cooling plant (including ductwork), etc.

We have very close relationships with the manufacturers of all brands used locally, and we can get you a great price.

Call for an estimate today. And, by the way, ask about our warranties. They vary with the product, of course.

I’m sure you will be happy with our quality of workmanship, products and customer support. So, if you want the straight story about A/C and heating in Arlington, Texas, call us at (817) 465-1112.

Do You Service or Install My Favorite “Trusted” AC or Heating Brand?

Speaking of brands – Back in the day, there was a huge difference in the quality of components between the different major brands of air conditioners and heaters.

Today there are some differences for sure but, they are minor ones. Each brand has their own proprietary parts, to be sure, but their functions are the basically the same.

Quality and standardization has become the norm in air conditioning and heating products, and good technicians can easily work on all makes and models. To the question “Do you service or install my favorite “Trusted” AC or Heating brand?” we give an emphatic YES!

So, the most important things to consider when deciding which air conditioning and heating contractor to hire is the technical ability, work ethic, and attention to detail of their technicians. This is what we require of our technicians and qualities that we base our business upon.

The parts from one brand of A/C may not fit on another brand but the function and quality is about the same.

If you have a favorite brand that you prefer, we can install it!

If you are in need of air conditioning repair or service, we can definitely get the job done quickly and do quality work!

Here are some, but not all, of the brands we regularly install and repair: Lennox, Trane, Carrier, Comfortmaker, Honeywell, American Standard, Day and Night, Payne, GE, Westinghouse, Teledyne, Reznor, Modine…..

Are You A Reputable Company?

TNS Mechanical, LLC,  Providers of Quality Air Conditioning and Heating Repair, Service, and Installation in Arlington, Texas

TNS Mechanical, LLC is locally owned by Todd and Sheri Ylen (pronounced Why-Lynn). The company has been in business here in Arlington Texas for over 8 years.

TNS doesn’t spend a lot of money on advertising. This keeps their overhead low, and a large portion of that savings is passed on to you, the consumer.

You may not have heard of us. For the last 8 years we have relied on “word of mouth” – recommendations from happy customers………. and our business has grown.

A wise consumer knows that a big advertising budget does not guarantee quality – sometimes it is just the opposite. But, a big advertising budget does definitely affect your price for product and services.

We can share a list of happy customers with you – residential and commercial – if it will help you be more comfortable with us. Our files are loaded with “Thank you” mails and emails just like this one from a local business man:

“TNS Mechanical handles all my business and personal HVAC needs.  They are honest, dependable, and punctual.  I wouldn’t trust my business to anyone else.”

Todd Ylen, co-owner of TNS Mechanical, has been working HVAC for over 25 years and is a specialist at “all things HVAC”. He’s the “go to” guy for problem installations and repairs. Other companies call him when they can’t figure out how to proceed.

Sheri Ylen is the business manager. She makes sure you are well taken care of.

Please understand that the questions she asks you on the phone are designed to help get you cool faster. For instance, questions about your current A/C (brand, age, type, etc.) help her get the parts most likely to fix your A/C unit on the truck before it rolls.

TNS can’t carry a full inventory for all brands and models on their trucks but, in a lot of cases, just this small attention to detail, up front, can save a lot of time!

Todd oversees and mentors his team of technicians and does field work as well.

Every technician is qualified to work on any brand of air conditioning system or furnace (including heat pumps).

Our technicians are instructed to keep the customer informed about the service / repair procedure – i.e., what is wrong, and what is needed to fix the problem. We believe that a fully informed customer is usually a happier customer.
